The Phuket Cafe has a lot of vegetarian options and they are family friendly.

The restaurant’s name comes from Phuket one of the southern provinces of Thailand and Thailand's largest island. Phuket is a popular tourist spot world renowned for its white sand beaches, palm trees and lively towns. The island lies off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. The island has a multicultural history Europeans (Dutch, Portuguese, French and British) in the 16th century with Chinese immigrating in the 19th century.

“Thai food originated with the people who emigrated from the southern Chinese provinces into modern day Thailand many centuries ago. Historically there were many Szechwan influences in Thai cuisine, although over the centuries many other influences have affected Thai food. In a more distant past, Buddhist monk brought an Indian touch, and southern Muslim states influenced the cooking in the south of Thailand. Much later, Thai food was influenced by European cuisine after contact with Portuguese missionaries and Dutch traders. During these times there were even some influences from the Japanese. Today Thai food is its own, with a special unique blend of the 5 tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and spicy.”  From the Khaola Explorer website.  https://www.khaolakexplorer.com/thailand-guide/thai-cuisine/

Yellow Curry from the lunch menu - topped with fried onions

Yellow Curry from the lunch menu - topped with fried onions

I ordered the Karee, Yellow Thai Curry, with chicken. When ordering off the lunch menu you get a smaller portion and the rice comes on the same plate. I still took home a small box for dinner. Karee is yellow curry with coconut milk served with potatoes, carrots and topped with fried onions. The potatoes and carrots were perfectly cooked! The curry had the right amount of heat for me. This kind of heat that hits the back of your throat and feels warm. Having my mouth set on fire isn’t important to me. I like to taste the flavors and enjoy the meal. This dish was just right for me…rich and flavorful.

Pad Thai served with chicken served with rice on the lunch menu

Pad Thai is a traditional meal in Thailand and can be found on almost every Thai restaurant. It’s a good item to test the quality of a Thai restaurant’s flavors. Pad Thai is made with soaked dried rice noodles, chopped scrambled eggs and is flavored with a tamarind, fish sauce, dried shrimp, garlic or shallots, red chili pepper and palm sugar sauce and served with wedges of lime and chopped roasted peanuts. Most restaurants offer your choice of protein; tofu, shrimp, chicken or pork. It may contain vegetables like bean sprouts or green onions.

Shelly ordered the Pad Thai with chicken off the lunch menu. The lunch portion is smaller and it’s served with white rice on the same plate. The Phuket Cafe’s Pad Thai has good flavors in the sauce and it’s not too sweet. The menu says they adds eggs, sweet radishes, beansprouts and tops the dishes with green onions. The menu said peanuts, but she didn’t get any on this dish. She didn’t get any radishes, either? They are accommodating so I think you could ask for them.

Seven Suns - coffee + breakfast burrito

I met my friend Brenda Eastman for coffee at Seven Suns Coffee & Cafe at 1011 S. Mt. Shasta Blvd., which is one of the most popular coffee spots in Mount Shasta. I met up with my friend Brenda to catch up and hear about her trip to England. Brenda and her partner recently returned from a 10 day trip to London and surrounding communities.

I figured this would be a good time to check out the Breakfast Burrito that several of the people I’ve interviewed for The Bill Plate have recommended. The Breakfast Burrito at Seven Suns is a favorite food of Kendra Bainbridge, owner of Raven Tree. “My absolute favorite breakfast dish is Seven Suns Veggie Burrito, substitute tofu for the eggs and nix the cheese,” states Vegan Mom, Kristin Allen.

I like the coffee at Seven Suns. If memory serves, Has Beans Coffee & Tea opened a coffee shop and roasters the mid 1990’s before moving to Chico. I remember the smell of coffee beans roasting at the southern end of town. I love the smell! Seven Suns continues to sell Has Beans Coffee & Tea.

We ordered our drinks and a Breakfast Burrito with bacon to share. The eggs were nicely cooked and still moist. The bacon was cut into more of a crumble which made it kind of salty when I got that bite. The salsa is a fresh mild to medium tomato based salsa. All of the shredded potatoes were in the bottom of my half of the burrito. It would have improved the saltiness and taste of the burrito if the fillings were spread evenly throughout the burrito. It seems to be the case with restaurant burritos they just don’t take the time to have the interiors evenly distributed. Brenda and I were busy catching up so I didn’t ask her if she got potatoes. That said it was a good breakfast burrito.

I’ll plan ahead the next time I go to Seven Suns and bring my own cup and quarters for a San Francisco Chronicle. I do my best to avoid single use paper cups and was told they no longer have ceramic mugs available for on-site consumption. The barista refused to give me change for a dollar so I could purchase a paper.

Bistro no. 107 - Gourmet Burgers

Bistro No. 107 is located at  107 Chestnut St. on the corner of S. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in downtown Mount Shasta. This location has been a restaurant for as long a I can remember. It was Willy's Bavarian Restaurant in the 90's then The Goat. Serge bought it a few years ago and now they specialize in gourmet burgers.

Bistro No. 107 has a clean European vibe with inside/outside seating or you can sit at the bar. Our server was Donny, he was lively with a friendly attitude, just what we wanted for a Sunday lunch. My friend Lynn and chose to sit inside in the air conditioned dinning room.

I had the halibut burger, the patty includes spinach and peppers giving it lots of flavor. For my side I chose a green salad with blue cheese. I'm not a fan of focaccia so I had the halibut burger on their brioche bun. The pickled onions added just the right amount of tartness and crunch. The burger went well with the Etna Blackberry Blonde. When we got our food the kitchen had our sides on the wrong plates, so they happily straightened it out.

Lynn had the California Garden Burger, a house made veggie burger with sweet potato fries. She said the burger was a little hard to eat, because the veggie patty didn't hold together so well, but it was tasty so she had no trouble finishing it up with a fork. The kitchen forgot the arugula, but it was stacked tall with avocado, alfalfa sprouts, tomatoes and red onion, so she didn't miss the addition layer of lettuce. Neither of us had room for dessert!

My daughter enjoyed the pineapple hard cider she had when we ate at the Klamath Basin Brewing Co. and when I told her the Bistro No. 107 had it on the menu we made plans to go eat on the following Thursday when Shelly and Chris go off of work. Both Chris and Shelly were happy with the Pineapple Hard Cider. I thought it had more pineapple flavor than the Ace brand she had in Oregon.

Shelly and Chris split the Blue Cheese Burger with sweet potato fries and garlic aioli. I had a Classic Burger with a green salad and house made 1000 Island dressing. The garlic aioli is a creamy garlicky dip for the perfectly cooked sweet potato fries.

The Classic Burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. It makes for a tall burger!

We enjoyed the atmosphere, service and the food. The menu has something for everybody, including vegetarians. On my two trips last week we all ordered burgers, but there are salads and other items to try...next time.

Taco Combo Lunch at Casa Ramos in Mount Shasta

Every meal at Casa Ramos begins with warm salty tortilla chips and spicy housemade salsa.

Every meal at Casa Ramos begins with warm salty tortilla chips and spicy housemade salsa.

This week I joined my daughter and our friend 'Teacher Chris' for lunch at Casa Ramos in Mount Shasta. They have a standing lunch date every Tuesday, this week they invited me. Since they both only get a one hour lunch good food with efficient service is important to them. They eat at Casa Ramos about once a month.

Our server was efficient and very sweet with a good sense of humor. When asked what was on today's Lunch Special (they used to one) he grinned and laughed telling us "It's all special." It's an old line, but he was having fun with it and so did we. I think happy server makes the food taste better.

Marco's Mother Eleodora, Marco Ramos, Marco's Father, Justino Ramos with Marco's Sister Blanca

Coming from Mexico City in 1982 Marcos went to work for his cousin in their family restaurant in Seattle. Like many restaurant owners Marco started his career as a dishwasher and moved his way through the food service operations learning how to run a successful restaurant business. In 1997 Marco Ramos opened his first restaurant in Yreka in 1997 calling it Casa Ramos, "House of Ramos."  His goal was to create a family friendly eatery where all are welcome to enjoy the warm hospitality of Marco Ramos and his family. Soon after opening the Yreka restaurant he opened the Mount Shasta restaurant located at 1136 S. Mt. Shasta Blvd. There are now 14 restaurants throughout Northern California.

My family and I have been eating at Casa Ramos since they built "the new Mexican restaurant" named for Marco Ramos and his family after Marilyn's burned down. Marilyn's served a great breakfast and lunch from a horseshoe shaped counter and there was the landmark wooden buggy parked out front.

The food at Casa Ramos is constantly good, service is right on and the food is well priced. Casa Ramos is family friendly with options for vegans and vegetarians. Casa Ramos is one of our favorite places for birthdays and family dinners.

Casa Ramos has a full bar with a nice list of Tequilas and Mexican beers. The outside patio is a comfortable place to eat and watch the world go up and down the boulevard... weather permitting.

Casa Ramos Taco Combo for Lunch with Shelly and Chris

Shelly had one shrimp and one steak taco "Please, hold the cilantro" with refried beans; Chris had one shrimp and one chicken taco with refried beans, and I had one shrimp and one steak taco with rancho beans. We all agreed the shrimp taco was a nice alternative to a meat filling and we all enjoyed the meat tacos, too. Chris said. "It was delicious! Not as heavy as some Mexican food can be." Consensus was that we would order the Taco Combo again! We had a lovely meal like only good friends can with lots of laughter and good stories. The server kept our water glasses full at just the right time.

Tip: Street Tacos, is typically the more traditional Mexican style taco that I eat when I'm in Mexico. With street tacos you get the fillings served in two small soft corn tortillas. The best way to eat these is to separate the two shell and enjoy your taco allowing the filling to fall out on to the second tortilla...now you have two delicious tacos! Or you can do what I do and just make two tacos to start off. There will always be filling that falls out because that how you know it's a good taco.
